Traces of Heritage

In May I participated in the Heritage Matters workshop at CHI 2012 organized by Elisa Giaccardi, Elizabeth Churchill and Sophia Liu. It was a very thought-provoking workshop.

My collaborator, Amelia Abreu and I presented a position paper entitled, “Traces of Heritage: An Archival Approach to Digital Collections.” The paper argues that in order to get ‘heritage’ right in systems design, HCI researchers should look to archival theories for ways to approach and preserve digital collections. We specifically discussed the concepts of archival bond and archivization with the group. Amelia and I presented case studies and design scenarios from each of our dissertations: the #canucksriot tweets and text message application settings.

Austin, TX was a great place to conference. A special shout out to Janet, Diana, Kate and Georgia for being great tour guides.

The ACM SIGCHI is an international conference on human-computer interaction. The theme for CHI 2013 is changing perspectives. It will be held in Paris. Here’s the CFP.
